Ectropion is the medical term for an eyelid that turns outward. It can be caused by the downward sagging of an eyelid due to aging. It can also be due to scarring, paralysis of the lower lid, prior surgery, or an eyelid tumor. Ectropion can cause tearing and irritation of the eye and eyelid. It is corrected surgically by tightening and rotating the lower eyelid inward.
